how to make a flower crown/garland tutorial

as you can tell by my blog name and all photos of me from three or four years ago to now, I am literally the biggest sucker for flower crowns! minus when I was at school, I literally wore them everyday, and now i'm at college, you will never see me without one in my hair omg ((I get called things from a woodland creature to a fairy by random cashiers and bus drivers, it's really quite cool))
they randomly sold two different colours of them in Primark for a pound or two back in 2009, then they disappeared for 4 years until this summer, where much to my dismay, they came into fashion.. this meant all shops stocked them, and at ridiculous prices! Topshop were selling ones that weren't all very nice and with very small flowers, for £14, which was totally ridiculous, so I started making my own :-) at first I spent a lot of money on it, but now I've made quite a few, I've bulk bought a whole load of flowers and it's become fairly cheap to make! here's how I do it..

((Hobbycraft is a big craft shop that looks like a warehouse which stocks loads and loads of fake flowers, so go to your nearest one if you can, even if it's a while away, it'll save you a load of money in the long run, and there's literally so much to choose from!!))
I picked up most of these from Hobbycraft or my local fabricy shop called Fabric Land, ranging from 59p for a single rose, to £1.49 for the small bunches you can see in the bottom left, where you get 12 little flowers which I tend to mix and match! you can tell this already is going to be a lot cheaper than £14, plus you can make the perfect crown as opposed to buying whatever is in the shop!

next step is to grab yourself a hairband ((I find this a lot better than elastic ones that go all the way around your head, as they stay on easier and you can push your fringe back with them if you wish)), some glue which is pretty damn strong and means your flowers won't fall apart ((unlike certain stores' ones i've come across, *ahem*)), and some plyers, but these aren't a necessity, but means you're less likely to get glue on your fingers :-)

once you've done this, you're all set to go! grab the flowers you chose from earlier, and if it's possible it'd be better to pick the ones that have a wire stemming down from the flower, as these can actually wrap around the band and give it a lot more hold, and make them a lot easier to make! if not, it's not a problem, you're just gonna have to use even more glue :-)

((this is where the plyers comes in handy, the bit where you're likely to glue yourself everywhere is here, as once you've stuck the flower down you're going to want to move it around to position you want!!))

after you've glued it all together, if you've got a wire on the bottom of your flower ((which most i've come across do!!)), wrap it around your band, and don't worry if it looks messy, as nobody will actually see that bit :-)
this helps it all stay together, and even though the glue will hold it all together, they sit a lot nicer on the band!

the glue will dry a lot quicker like this and will help keep the flower in place! although the flower looks a little squished, it'll only be for about 30 seconds or so, and it'll go back into place just fine :-)
carry on this process with as many flowers as you like, I suggest trying it on every now and then to check it looks fine and that you're putting the right amount on! ((tip: make sure the glue is totally dry before doing this, sounds stupid, but I thought it was dry before and managed to get glue in my hair and needed to cut a little out, SO BE CAREFUL, KIDS))

once you're finished, try it on a final time and add any more that you'd like, and tweak it all around until you're happy! I know this looks very messy, but all of mine look like this and they're super duper strong and mine have been through the wars, I literally sit on them, chew the ends, fall asleep in them..you get the gist
they won't break, and you can't even see any of this once it's on! it'll all be flat against your head or covered by your hair :-)
sadly, i'm having a bad hair day and it's nearing 8pm when i'm writing this, so i'll show you a picture of one I made a few weeks ago with the smaller flowers, and you can see what they turn out like :-)!

the only picture I could find sadly, one with a toilet in the back, a finger in the bottom left, and just generally not the fabbest of photos but you get the idea

and there we have it, and unnecessarily long winded tutorial on how to make some pretty flowers, so you too, can look like a woodland creature/fairy x

p.s some people have said they wanted me to make me some of these for them, so if you're interested on a neater version of one of these, from a wider selection of flowers, drop me an email to flowercrownsandgirlpower@gmail.com!

until next time, Mary x
